English: Railways at Holmes Junction, Rotherham 1998.
View eastward from a footbridge off Psalter Road: the twin tracks to the left were the ex-Midland main lines, through Rotherham (Masborough) station (closed 3/10/88) to Swinton, Wath Road Junction and Leeds/York, used by through fast trains. The single line on the right is the loop connecting with the old North Midland line to Chesterfield and the South. In the centre is the single-line Holmes Chord, opened 11/5/87 over part of the original ex-Midland line to Rotherham Westgate terminus, connecting with the former GCR main line from Sheffield to Doncaster through a new Rotherham Central station. After new connections had been made between the parallel Midland and GC main lines at Nunnery Junction and at Aldwarke in April 1965, all through passenger trains east of Sheffield have used the former Midland station at Sheffield and have run via Wincobank (now Meadowhall) and Holmes Junction. After that the ex-GC line from Sheffield via Tinsley has been freight-only. Holmes station was behind the camera and was closed 19/9/55.
